For being a Frigate, it's armament is extensive. I also noticed it's really hard to find any viewports/windows. Are there any? I love the detail work. How did you get the ship name lettering to stay defined like that? If i zoom out too far, the wording on my models turn low res and are just pixels of white dots.
Hi, thanks for the comment! Yup, there are several viewports/windows on it, but they are all along the inner edge of the central section (with all the machinery in it). Yup, I agree it's over the top armed. All of my ships from that period are, hehehe. The again it's massive, at approx 1km in length. Waaay too big for a mere frigate. I have since made battlecruisers that are half the size. Lettering: I made it in 3d, that's probably why it stands out from afar. If you use Google Sketch up, then this model is available to you for free on 3d warehouse along with a selection of my other early work, all under scifiwarships, [link]
Don't get me wrong, i love all the guns, but i wonder how long it would last in a battle. If it fires projectiles or plasma, it's out of ammo in 2.2 minutes. (Then again, I guess that's all the time you would need to win the battle with so much firepower).
Good point, and I have actually given it some thought. This ship is 1km long and it fires 875mm KE railgun rounds. The size of the projectile is 875mm dim and 1200mm tall. They are shaped like blunt traffic cones, with very thick/tall bases(for contact with the gun barrel). because of the traffic cone shape they can be stacked. A typical magazine block is 10by10m and two decks high which is roughly 6 meters. with projectiles stacked 6 high. Each of these blocks have 726 rounds, and at a firing rate of 1 round per second per gun. You go through one block in 3 min. per turret. In a ship 1km long and 300m wide, this ship has cavernous holds, and will carry some 100000 rounds or more. Probably more. This being the future and all the ship fires these rounds with high accuracy, and in bursts. But you are right that on full tilt it eats ammo like popcorn he he. Thank you for the feedback. I like being asked these things, because it let's me explain stuff, but moreover it sharpens my designs as stuff I haven't thought about is pointed out to me. Cheers!
Sweet! Creative (stack-able ammo). I'd love to see a fleet of these vs a fleet of cylon basestars or imperial destroyers... ...Ahhh, I like imagination land...
On another note, i also noticed you mentioned SketchUp on one of your posts. I looked it up and i am in love with this program. Cant wait until i make something worthwhile.
(Ive been living in the dark ages and only found out about it now...) Later.
Sketch up is brilliant. I have experience with professional design software such as AutoCad and Vectorworks, and they are very compicated and hideously expensive. I also tried out 3DsMax, but compared to SketchUp, it was like going from a bike to a Jumbo jet. I didn't stand a chance trying to learn it on my own. On SU, however I'm self taught. The program is so intuitive and simple to learn. Best of luck, mate.
Sold! I'll throw in six more, and you'll have a squadron. It comes with a never-to-be-bullied-again guarantee + unlimited milage warranty from the manufacturer.

Great design on all your ships though.
